Ancient Cities of Sri Lanka

Magnificently positioned on the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is home to many ancient cities with distinct and diverse features. The artefacts, historical monuments and cultural works of art found in each of these incredible ancient cities are different to each other, and that alone makes a visit to Sri Lanka simply appealing.

Anuradhapura, which was founded in the 4th century, was Sri Lanka’s first capital up until 1073 BC. It was in the 19th century that the British re-discovered Anuradhapura. The most important feature of this unique ancient city is the Sri Maha Bodhi or the sacred Bodhi Tree, which is a branch of the original Jaya Shri Maha Bodhi that resides in Bodhi Gaya where Lord Buddha attained enlightenment. The Ruwanveliseya Dagoba that was built by King Dutugamunu in the 2nd century B.C has become one of the popular attractions in Anuradhapura.

During the latter part of the 10th century AD, Polonnaruva became Sri Lanka’s second capital city. Kings who ruled the country from this great city include Parakramabahu I, Nissanka Malla and Vijayabahu I. These Kings were also responsible for constructing some of the historically acclaimed buildings in Polonnaruva that can be viewed even today. One of the main attractions in this ancient city is the enormous water tank namely the Parakrama Samudra. The city also boasts the relics of some great carvings such as the Galvihara images of Lord Buddha.

The Ancient City of Sigiriya is one of the country’s most famous and attractive places to explore. This is where the relics of a palace that dates back to the 5th century can be seen. The palace is set 600 feet above ground on the world renowned Lion Rock. On the way to the summit, travellers can view the frescoes and the mirror wall. At the foot of the rock, there are ponds, gardens, fountains and rock carvings that reveal the exceptional heritage of this stunning ancient city.

Yet another significant prehistoric city of Sri Lanka is Kandy, which is also the final kingdom of the country. Similar to all other ancient cities, Kandy is considered sacred to the country and Buddhist followers, as it is the resting place of the tooth relic of Lord Buddha. The temple of the tooth or the Dalada Maligawa is an eminent pilgrimage site that is popular among both local and international travellers.

Each ancient city of Sri Lanka has immensely contributed to the culture, religion, arts and architecture of the country. The artefacts left behind continue to evoke the remarkable heritage of Sri Lanka and the efforts of its ancestors.
