Attractions in Galle

Best known among tourists as well as local travellers as a paradise of sea and sun, Galle attracts many travellers due to its location in the Southern part of the island. Therefore, most who comes to Galle never misses to enjoy the beauty of the sea and sand.

Galle Dutch Fort is among the more popular sights in Galle where it attracts those who value archaeological reserves and heritage. It is known as the oldest fort in Asia, named as a world heritage by UNESCO. Inside the fort, travellers can find other attractions such as the Dutch Museum, which contains paintings, pictures and furniture of the Dutch Reformed Church. The fort is built on small peninsula that can be easily accessed from the Galle town. It is the best place to visit during an evening as the picturesque scenery of the sunset can be witnessed at its best.

Koggala, which is located close by to the Galle town, is popular for its Museum of Folk, Art & Culture that is built in honour of the famous Sri Lankan writer, Martin Wickramasinghe. The Koggala Lake also attracts many visitors who love bird watching in the number of small islands that accommodates varieties of birds in Sri Lanka.

Another famous tourist attraction in Galle is the Unawatuna Beach, which is renowned for the calm sea that is best for safe swimming and snorkelling. Unawatuna is also rich in its bio diversity and is a true haven for those who love a walk on the perfect crescent on the sand.

Rumassala Mountain, which is clearly visible from the Unawatuna beach, is well known among the Sri Lankans and the Indians due to the legendary story that is attached to it. The place is featured in Ramayanaya as the place that Queen Sita was hidden.
