Adam's Peak also known as Adam's Mount is positioned in the central part of Sri Lanka. It is believed that Lord Buddha placed his footprint at the peak of this mountain during his third visit to Sri Lanka. Therefore, Adam's Peak which is commonly known by locals as Sri Pada or the Holy Footprint, boasts of immense sacred value.
However this mountain is sacred not merely to the Buddhists. It is considered sacred to the three other major religions of the world such as Hinduism, Christianity and Islam. Christians believe that the footprint is of St. Thomas, Muslims believe the footprint is of Adam while Hindus believe that it is of god Siva. However, way before the development of these four main religions the indigenous people or the Veddas of Sri Lanka worshiped the mountain of Adam's Peak.
Adam’s Peak bearing a height of 7,362 feet stands tall in the Sabaragamuwa Province about 40 kilometres North East of Ratnapura. The area surrounding this magnificent and incomparable mountain is a wildlife reserve, which is home to many endemic species. Adam's Peak is also known as Samanalakande or Butterfly Mountain, since different types of butterflies from all across the nation fly to this sacred mountain in order to die upon it. There are four main routes that are used to access this precious mountain.
Due to its religious, cultural and natural significance, travellers both local and international visit Adam's Peak in great numbers. The most appropriate time to climb the mountain is during December and May. The pilgrimage usually happens in the month of April. Other times of the year is considered not too good to climb the mountain due to heavy rain and wind conditions.
There is a small temple located at the peak of the mountain. Buddhists believe that there is a strange healing power in the rain water taken from the sacred footprint.
With immense power, sacredness and beauty Adam's Peak will always remain as Sri Lanka’s cherished mountains of all.
