Zoological gardens are an extremely popular attraction for both the young and old. With an abundance of live animals to awe and amaze, zoos are also home to much flora and fauna along with fun and exciting performances of animals such as elephants and sea lions.
Sri Lanka is home to only one official zoo, the Dehiwala Zoo that resides on the outskirts of greater Colombo. The animals found here are both intriguing and magnificent. With a fine array of species including some from the cat family amphibians and reptiles, visitors are sure to see an array of wildlife. Furthermore, the Dehiwala Zoo is also home to an aquarium that showcases many of the exotic and vibrant marine life that inhabits the waters of this island paradise.
The Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage that is located in the hills of Kegalle on the way to Kandy is home to some of the finest elephant that are found in captivity. The project, which is one of the world’s most successful relief projects, is currently home to over 80 pachyderms. The orphanage, which encourages tourism, offers the public the chance to mingle with these beautiful endangered species by way of feeding and even bathing these beautiful animals in the Mahaweli River.
