Gregory Lake

Famed by the British as little England, Nuwara Eliya was once a popular holidaying spot for the colonisers due to its cool and pleasant weather; which is very much similar to that of their homeland. They built a number of bungalows, golf courses, and clubhouses within the town, and to further beautify the newfound oasis, they also built a lake; which dazzles today as the Lake Gregory. The lake was constructed during the period of Governor Sir William Gregory hence it was named after him. Located, amidst misty mountains and lush tea hills, Gregory Lake is a prime attraction in Nuwara Eliya.

The land which the lake is located today was once a swampy bog, it was constructed in order to give the town a new dimension and to offer enough room for it to expand. As time progressed, the lake was also used for recreational activities and in 1913, the water from the lake was directed towards the Nanuoya power station to produce electricity. Honouring its original purpose, the region around the lake today has been extensively developed as a spot for recreational activity with swan boats, cycling pathways, speed boats, jet skis, and more. There are a number of eateries within the Gregory Lake Park which offer local delicacies as well as international favourites along with areas that have fun activities for children.

The best time to visit the Lake is during the month of April and this is when you can engage in all of the aforementioned activities. Also being the period of peak season, April leaves the gardens and parks of Nuwara Eliya in full bloom, and the city comes to life with a lot of amazing activities. During this time the city plays host to carnivals, music shows, and even horse, bike, and car races. With the festivities, the lake also receives a lot of reception from locals and tourists alike. If you do not like crowds however you could visit the lake during any time of the year except April, August, and December where there will be fewer people to disturb the tranquillity. During the offseason, you can have the lake all to yourself and explore it and its surroundings at peace.
