Groote Kerk Church

Located right at the entrance of Galle Fort, the Groote Kerk Church is one of the oldest protestant churches in the country. The church was built in the year of 1755 and is believed to be the third structure to serve as the dutch reformed church. One of the other two churches was built right opposite to this church and the other was constructed near the Galle Clock tower.

The Church is constructed on the tallest point of the fort which stands proudly at a height of 12 meters above sea level. The foundation stone for the church was laid in the year 1682 but further construction was postponed for over several decades. Fortunately in the year of 1755, Commandeur of Galle – Casparus de Jong and his wife Geertruyda Adriana Le Grand donated the money that was required to complete the church as a gesture of gratitude towards God for the birth of their daughter. The child was baptised at the church once its construction was completed.

The church was renovated and expanded over the years of colonial rule which changes to the interior as well as the exterior. A second hand-organ was also installed within the church along with stained glass windows and other additions to its façade. The Church also boasts a unique architectural design that resembles Doric style which was famous during the period it was constructed. Many churches around the island depict the same construction style and it is one of the most notable features of the site.

As the church was several centuries old, during the dawn of the 21st century it had endured several damages and disfigurations due to the tests of time. Luckily, the country, recognising its cultural significance, with much care and caution renovated the church and restored it to its former glory. The renovation project also had financial aid from the Dutch embassy and with representatives of the Dutch government, the dutch reformed church, and Sri Lankan government officials the renovated building was inaugurated on 28th November 2004. The following year it also won the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Award for best practice for the successful restoration of the site.

Due to its religious, historic significance, today, the church has become a prominent attraction in the Galle Fort. And upon visiting the site, you will get a glimpse of the intricate craftsmanship of dutch architecture surrounded by a surreal and peaceful ambience!
