Ella Rock

Winding paths and stunning landmarks amidst nature’s embrace in the hills of Sri Lanka…does the prospect thrill your senses enough for an adventure in Ella? Ella Rock is deemed to be one of the best places to embark on a hike in Sri Lanka by many tourists and there is a good reason as to why. To begin with, the hike isn’t all that easy, so for those without enough experience, this might be a bit of a challenge though highly adventurous.

The best way to reach Ella is by train and it is a well known fact that the train ride from Kandy to Ella is regarded as one of the world’s most scenic train rides! If you are starting your trek from the railway station, stick to following the railroad passing the station till you spot a blue sign saying, “Ella Rock”, then take the open path to your left, cross the footbridge and go left once again from the forking junction. Keep to the path that is fast rising which will then lead you onto a tea plantation. As you walk through the plantation, the terraces of tea seem to stretch out for an eternity and are simply beautiful! Eventually, you’ll walk out onto a field with tall grass. Your last landmark will be a forest of Eucalyptus trees that’ll transport you to nature’s cradle from the land of sprawling tea hills. Pick a path and just keep climbing up and you’ll end up on Ella Rock.

Be warned that there are a few shortcuts to take at 2 points of your hike. You’ll find one at the point where there is a Buddha statue and another path that opens up by a bench. Not everyone is lucky enough to make it to Ella Rock using these shortcuts. It can get quite complicated and you’ll eventually end up losing your sense of direction before you know it. If you do want to take these shortcuts though, make sure you are with a guide so that you’ll know where you are going.

Now that you’ve reached your destination with such determination and hard work, nature rewards you for your effort with mesmerising views of Ella Gap! The mountains and greenery seem to be as endless as the ocean from up here, the clouds that hang low over the mountainous terrain give the entire scene a very mystique look that is truly intriguing in every sense.
