Isurumuniya Viharaya

Located amidst a surreal setting surrounded by lush greenery, quaint little ponds and breezy winds, Isurumuniya Viharaya is a Buddhist shrine that is renowned for its stone carvings. Situated at proximity to the ancient Tissa Wewa, the shrine has been built upon on a rocky outcrop which presents you with immaculate vistas of the surroundings. Being a site that is ensconced in a tranquil ambience, Isurumuniya Viharaya offers you an opportunity to experience a deep sense of calm along with opportunities to learn about history.

Long before the shrine was built in this site, it is believed that it was the place where the mystical hermit known as the Pulasthi Rishi lived. It was also known as the place where King Ravana the antagonist of the Hindu epic Ramayana was born. Historic evidence state that the shrine was built by King Devacanampiya Tissa during 307 and 267 BC at the height of the Anuradhapura Kingdom. The shine has several structures placed around the rock and the most notable feature is the building which as been constructed adjoining the rock which also extends itself within the rock as a cave.

As mentioned before, the site is not only famous for its historical significance, but also its artistic allure! Isurumuniya has 3 notable sculptures namely, the Isurumuni Lovers, the royal family carving, and the elephant pond. The first two sculptures are regarded as few of the most unique and well-preserved specimens of Gupta art. It is believed that the Isurumuni Lovers sculpture depicts a true couple of which the male was King Dutugemunu’s son Saliya and the female Asokamala who was a maiden of a low caste. Historical evidence state that the prince gave up the throne for the person he loved hence the couple has been portrayed on a statue due to the selfless and true love they had towards each other.

The King’s family and the elephant pond carving also boast a detailed yet wondrous image and it showcases the talents of the craftsmen who lived aeons ago. With its enticing appeals and a multitude of unique artistic creations, the Isurumuniya Viharaya is certainly a place well worth visiting!
