Kudumbigala Monastery

Being one of the first nations that embraced the ways of Buddhism in ancient times, even the most remote of regions houses ruins and remains of the site which were of great religious significance. One such site is the Kudumbigala Monastery and it stays perched precariously on top of a rocky outcrop surrounded by stunning scenery. The monastic complex is indeed one of the oldest on the island and backed by historic evidence, it has been stated that the complex was constructed during the year 246BC under the patronage of king Dutugemunu. Ancient chronicles further state that the establishment was constructed as a refuge for monks and it served as a school for samaneras who wanted a tranquil place to meditate, teach and learn; away from the populated regions of the Anuradhapura Kingdom.

The site even today boasts a surreal ambience and its numerous ruins suggest it had endured a great deal of destruction both natural and manmade. There are also stories the remains of the complex being further destroyed during the civil war that lasted for over 30 years in the country. The site also consists of a number of caves and several archaeological excavations had taken place around the complex over the years. During the research, several stone inscriptions were unearthed and after translating the scripts numerous historic discoveries were made through the findings.

Today the site is open to the public and it attracts history buffs and adventurers alike with its alluring views and a solemnly calm ambience. The site is located approximately 25 Kilometers away from Arugambay and the easiest way to reach here is by a tuk-tuk. You could also visit the site by getting in touch with a local tour operator.
