Ranmasu Uyana

Located in proximity to the ancient yet elegant Isurumuniya temple, Ranmasu Uyana is a park that once housed the royal garden of Isurumunia. Though it still retains its mysterious yet enticing allure, most of its significant structural attributes have come under ruins. The park is also located on the banks of Tissa Wewa and it spans over an area of 40 acres. Being next in beauty to only the royal gardens of Sigiriya, Ranmasu Uyana is another brilliant specimen of ancient garden landscaping and architecture in Sri Lanka.

The park today houses the ruined remains of numerous bath pools, small buildings, and gathering areas. There are several ruins of unique mechanical implementations that would have been used for different hydraulic implications. Even today the region is surrounded by an air of tranquillity, instilling a profound sense of calmness in your mind once visited.

Historic evidence state that the park was built during the 3rd century BC under the patronage of King Tissa, however, the structures of which only the ruins remain today, were part of more recent installations and were built during the 8th and 9th centuries. Due to some of the ruin’s mysterious nature and outlook, there are even speculations of them being connected with some extraterrestrial origins while many historians say that they were part of more ordinary and practical structures. But the origins and the purpose of these structures are still under debate! (Maybe you could decide what they really are when you pay a visit to the site).
