Rumassala Sanctuary Unawatuna

Located just a few Kilometers away from the world-renowned Jungle Beach in Unawatuna, Rumassala Sanctuary is indeed a paradise for those who love nature. The site is located in proximity to the coast and features a peninsular region that is blanketed by greenery. The sanctuary is home to numerous plant species of which many are believed to have medicinal value. Numerous bird and animal species also inhabit the region and some of the commonly spotted bird species at the sanctuary are herons, kingfishers, pelicans, and sandpipers. The endemic purple-faced langur can also be spotted in Rumassala.

Due to its abnormally fertile soil, numerous tales have been woven around the site one of which is from the Hindu epic Ramayana that states part of the Sanjeevani Hill from the Himalayas has been brought to Sri Lanka by Hanumantha (the monkey god) and was dropped accidentally – eventually becoming the Rumassala. Among the folklore, there are even tales of treasures that were lost in the region.

You can easily reach the entrance of the sanctuary by a tuk-tuk from Galle and there is another option of getting here by the sea from Unawatuna on a boat.
