The Old and New Kathiresan Kovils

One, located in Bambalapitya right next to the Galle road, and the other in Pettah, the Old and New Kathiresan temples are indeed two of the most significant Hindu temples in Colombo. Both of the temples are dedicated to the war god Murugan or Skanda and feature tall verticle structures that are heavily adorned with sculptures that depict characters from ancient Hindu chronicles. The interior features an expansive atrium of which the roofs are embellished in vibrantly coloured paintings and sculptures.

The temples are told to be more than a hundred years old and both of them, the old and new have shrines within its premises that house idols of deities that are decorated with garlands and gold jewellery. Visitors could also offer garlands to the gods which they can purchase at the entrance of the temples. Priests at the temples occasionally conduct poojas (special prayers) and this is when devotees participate in the rituals and receive blessings.

During July, the temples come to life with lavish decorations and adornments for the chariot festival where a chariot is carried from the old temple to the new one in Bambalapitiya. The new temple also has two expansive wedding halls where Hindu weddings are often carried out. Visiting here as a tourist will certainly be a delightful experience. With both of the temples boasting a tranquil and surreal environment, with eccentric vistas and sweet fragrances of incense, a visit to any of the two temples will instil a profound sense of peace within your mind and soul.
