Take a hike on the Moon Plains

Surrounded by the jagged peaks of Sri Lanka’s central highlands are the beautiful slopes of Moon Plains. This carpet of verdant greenery can be absolutely amazing to hike through and explore – a definite bucket list activity if you’re touring through Nuwara Eliya and its vicinity.

The Moon Plains is only a recently-opened attraction and was actually the site of a garbage dump once. This site – located just a few minutes away from Nuwara Eliya City – was reconditioned in 2010 and transformed into the picturesque plains of greenery that you see today. In fact, it is now classified as an Agricultural and Environmental Tourism Zone by the Municipality of Nuwara Eliya.

The best thing about hiking along the moon plains are the sights you’ll be seeing. The mountains that surround the plains are spectacular and awe-inspiring to look at – what’s more, they seem to go on forever as far as the eye can see. You can also visit the “Mini World’s End” while you’re here. This is located at the apex of a sheer cliff face that gives you an excellent view of the surrounding area.

A variety of wildlife also call the Moon Plains home, so keep your eyes peeled for them. The most common species you’re likely to encounter are wild sambar deer. Aside from these grazers, you might also run into water buffalo, spotted deer and even the shy and elusive Sri Lankan leopard! The plains are also a great spot for birdwatching as well. Many endemic and migratory species frequent the region, so be sure to bring your binoculars with you.
