Diving or Snorkelling in Tangalle Lagoon

Tangalle Lagoon ticks all the boxes associated with a tropical paradise. From calm clear waters to white sandy shores and shady palm trees, it’s got it all. As midday approaches and the sun begins to peak, why not get away from the heat by diving right into the lagoon – it’s perfect for diving or a spot of snorkelling.

Tangalle was initially a fishing village that was devastated during the 2004 Tsunami. In the years that followed, the area was rehabilitated and has gone onto becoming a popular tourist spot. Still, it’s not nearly as well-known as areas like Galle or Hikkaduwa – this means you can enjoy attractions like the Tangalle Lagoon in relative peace and solitude.

As far as getting in the water is concerned, you can always swim around freely near the shallow areas of the lagoon. However, if you want to properly explore the depths of the lagoon and get up-close and personal with its marine denizens, you’re going to have to go snorkelling or scuba-diving. Now, don’t worry if you have no prior experience with either activity. The Tangalle Diving Centre is found close to the lagoon and they offer a variety of lessons to help you get started. What’s more, you can hire yourself a guide here too. They will help you navigate the lagoon underwater and make sure everyone is safe for the duration of the activity.

Plenty of marine life inhabits the lagoon. These include various species of reef fish and a number of crustaceans. You might even get lucky and spot the odd wandering turtle as well!
