Aberdeen Falls

The waterfalls found in Sri Lanka are some of the best examples you can point to when discussing the raw natural beauty, the country has to offer. To this point, if you’re visiting the Nuwara Aliya area, be sure to make time to visit the Aberdeen Falls – it’s one of the most spectacular waterfalls you’ll find anywhere in Sri Lanka.

Named after a nearby tea plantation, Aberdeen Falls is sourced by a tributary of the Kelani River. There is a persistent rumour among Sri Lankans that this waterfall is connected to the Lakshapana Falls – found around 5 kilometres further south. It is believed that these two are connected via a secret underground tunnel that allows water to flow between the two locations.

In order to reach the falls, you’ll need to trek through a bit of jungle. These are home to all kinds of different wildlife – from endemic birds to rowdy macaques – so keep your eyes peeled for some great sightings. Eventually, you’ll reach a small observation platform that’s located along the left bank of the river. This should provide you with an unparalleled view of the falls – be sure to take your camera with you for some great snapshots.

Despite the fall’s relative popularity, its somewhat obscure location means that very few people frequent the location at any given time. This means it’s the perfect place to enjoy some quiet seclusion. What’s more, the pool at the base of the falls is relatively calm and perfect for a spell of swimming!
