Bambarakanda Falls

Few things capture Sri Lanka’s raw natural beauty as well as its waterfalls do. All throughout the island, you’ll find these spectacular natural creations exuding charm and serenity. Among these, none can match the sheer spectacle and majesty of the great Bambarakanda Falls – the tallest waterfall you’ll find in the entire island.

Measuring in at an astounding height of 240 metres, Bambarakanda Falls is a truly massive natural formation – one which you need to see up-close to truly appreciate. Make sure that you visit during the monsoonal season from March to April. During this period the Kuda Oya – a branch of the Walawe River – that sources the falls begin to overflow with water. As such, you’ll be able to witness massive quantities of water hurling down at impressive speeds every few second!

Reaching the falls is relatively easy if you’re staying in the Kalupahana area. The location is just off the A4 Highway, in-between the Belihul Oya and Haputale. You’ll have to take it from foot after passing the Kalupahana Junction. The trek to the falls is rough but the sight that awaits you at the very end makes it all worth it.

At the base of the falls is a calm pool that’s idea for swimming and bathing. The surrounding area is quite tranquil as well, full of great photo opportunities if you’re looking to add to your portfolio or your Instagram collection.
