Gokanna Temple

Located in the eastern coastal region of Sri Lanka, The Gokanna Viharaya was once a great temple! Although its greatness has faded away in the sands of time, its storied past still lives on inside folklores and tales. According to historic evidence, it is conclusive that the site was built by King Mahasen during the 3rd Century AD. The king had built the temple by destroying a Jain Monastery and the site was further modified and expanded by Kings who reigned after Mahasen.

The temple is located in proximity to a natural harbour and a port that was predominantly used for trade. Whoever invaded the nation, saw the importance of the site and it was one of their first targets for capture. Due to this unfortunate occurrence, the temple fell under the control of the Cholas at first, and then Kaling Maga but these invasions were warded off by Brave Kings who ruled the nation, and the temple was renovated and restored after the region was proclaimed by the Kings. Sadly, the temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in the 16th century as they captured the fort and along with it the famous Hindu temple, Thirukoneswaram was also destroyed by the garrison.

When the nation was relieved of the colonial rule, the Archeological Department of Sri Lanka has renovated the temple and today a small shrine with a stupa has been built there. Although the remains of its glorious past can be seen at the site, as you visit here, you could experience sa profound sense of peace in your mind along with a magical aura grow around you as you explore the site. The temple is located a few minutes drive away from the Trincomalee Town and you can reach here by a tuk-tuk.
