Pasikuda Ship Wrecks

Though the waters that surround Pasikuda, remain calm and quaint today, it has endured the fury of the elements and has heard many battle cries of naval warfares. The folk on the land were not harmed by many of these events but unfortunately, numerous ships had to face the destructive forces of nature for which they had met their doom. The details and the number of casualties are bleak but the remnants of these vessels lie at the bottom of the ocean floor now being reclaimed by mother nature.

These wrecks have now been evolved into artificial reef ecosystems that teem with marine life. And owing to their ecological significance and visual splendor, they have become popular dive sites. There are three major wreck sites located a few nautical miles away from the coast of Passikuda and they are namely, British Sargent wreck site, Lady McCullum, and Gladys Moller wreck site.

The British Sargent was once a British tanker and that was commissioned to arrive at the port of Trincomalee during World War II and it was destroyed in an air raid carried out by the Japanese airforce. Several other ships were also destroyed in the event and may of their remains lay scattered across the seabed.

The lady McCullum and Gladys Moller ships met their end by inclement weather which made them hit the reefs they now rest on the ocean floor peacefully giving life to numerous marine creatures. Most of the structures of these vessels remain intact and the clear waters let you take in even the tiniest of details. Excursions to these dive sites can be arranged by reaching out to local tour operators and opting for a dive tour will indeed be a memorable experience!
