Thanthirimale Rajamaha Viharaya

Anuradhapura is one of Sri Lanka’s most historically and culturally significant cities. This isn’t much of a surprise when you realise that the region was the site of the very first Sinhalese Kingdom. Sacred sites and historical landmarks are all around this city, and one of these is the Thanthirimale Rajamaha Viharaya.

Thanthirimale itself is a small village found about 40 kilometres away from Anuradhapura City. By all accounts, it would seem like just another Sri Lankan village if not for the resplendent Buddhist Temple found at its very centre. This temple – the Tahnthirimale Rajamaha Viharaya – is nestled amidst a collection of ancient rocks and forest. Most of it lies in ruin now which makes the minds wonder what this magnificent structure might have looked like back in the day.

According to legend, the temple was originally built by King Devanampiyatissa – Sri Lanka’s first Buddhist King – as a one-day stop to Arahanth Theri Sangamitta who was on her way to Anuradhapura. It seems that a once small temple and refuge gradually evolved into a majestic monastery as the decades went by.

The most striking and beautiful sight you’ll come across during your visit to the temple is the Samadhi and Reclining Buddha Statues. Carved into the great rocks that surround the temple, it perfectly displays the skills and craftsmanship of the ancient artists that lived in Anuradhapura at the time.

Unfortunately, the temple and these statues fell into ruin following the collapse of Sri Lanka’s ancient kingdoms. These ruins were rediscovered during the mid-20th century and extensive restorations projects were undertaken to restore the temple.

A visit to the temple is a chance to get a glimpse of what the Anuradhapura Kingdom must’ve been like during its heyday. So, don’t pass up the opportunity if you’re ever in the area.
