Bopath Ella

Located in proximity to a quaint village named Agalawatte in the district of Ratnapura, Bopath Ella is a cascade that is renowned among avid explorers and adventurers in the country for her scenic beauty and the trail that unfolds the cascade’s immaculate presence. Owing to its splendour, the site today has become a popular tourist attraction and tours to the site can be arranged by contacting a local tour operator.

Shaped as of the leaf of a sacred fig tree, Bopath Ella is a cascade that runs down a stony cliff. It is born out of a young river and gleams in white with bubbling waters. The cascade settles and calms over a large pool at its bottom and trickles down to the low lands and valleys beyond and over pebbles and worn rocks. The region is surrounded by surreal undergrowth which is lush and vibrant; small flowers, close grass, and reeds adorn its borders and the solemnly calm ambience instils peace and tranquillity in the minds of its visitors.

There are numerous tales and folklore woven around this spectacular site and most say there is a treasure hidden in the wilderness that houses the cascade. Many believe that a sacrificial ritual of killing 1000 humans should be made to uncover the treasure. There are even stories about ghosts and mythical creatures wandering around the waterfalls. On the contrary, many also believe in the deity, Saman appearing at the cascade. Apart from the old stories and the legends it holds, the site is indeed worthy of a visit and you will have no regrets in doing so!
