Lover’s Leap Falls

The central highlands of Sri Lanka contain some of the most picturesque landscapes and scenery you’ll find anywhere on the island. Among these, few can compete with the raw natural beauty of the region’s waterfalls. Now, if you’re in Nuwara Eliya, you’re just a short drive away from one of these spectacular sights – the Lover’s Leap Falls.

You might be wondering how the falls got their name. Well, according to legend, a royal prince once went hunting up in the surrounding forests. On his hunt, he ran into a woman at a small village and fell madly in love with her. Because of the class divide that existed between them, the King opposed their union. In a fit of despair, it is said that the young couple jumped to their deaths off the edge of the falls.

In order to reach the falls, you’ll need to visit another one of Nuwara Eliya’s premier attractions – the Pedro Tea Estate. From here, you can ask your taxi driver to take you to the start of the waterfall walk. This rugged path will take you all the way to the falls themselves.

The walk up to Lover’s Leap Falls will net you amazing views of the neighbouring tea estates and the distant mountains – these are sure to be scenes that will stick with you for years to come. The falls are no less stunning of course. Here you can relax and bathe in the tranquil atmosphere – feel the refreshing spray of the falls on your face and appreciate the sounds of nature. There are few places in Sri Lanka that are as calm and serene as this.
