Mount Lavinia isn’t just another suburb found in Colombo, it is home to some of the most popular and serene beaches that Sri Lanka’s west coast has to offer. In fact, this residential suburb is renowned for its ‘Golden Mile”, a stretch of coastline that has long been a hotspot of local beachgoers and tourists alike.

Now, if you’re planning to get a taste of the tropical sun and take a cool dip in the Indian Ocean, there are several beaches for you to choose from in Mount Lavinia. To start off with, there’s Calido Beach – an ideal stop if you’re making your way to Kalutara. This is where the mighty Kalu River, which runs through the region, falls into the ocean. The water here is gentle and calm, meaning it’s a great location for a relaxing swim.

Kalutara Beach is not only one of Sri Lanka’s finest beaches, but it has also gained renown for being one of the finest in the world. Being just 40km away from the capital city of Colombo, this is a relatively easy visit for anyone that’s travelling through Sri Lanka. From scenic views to seemingly endless white-sand coasts, this a stop you should definitely consider making.

Then, of course, there’s the Mount Lavinia Beach itself. Located at the very heart of this busy suburb, it is almost always got a fair share of visitors. The beach itself is surprisingly spacious, making for an excellent location to just sit, relax and bathe in the tropical sun. The lively chatter of locals adds to the atmosphere and the warm sea breeze will gently lull you into a sense of unending serenity. The water here is perfect too, being warm and calm for most of the year. If you’re up for it, you can even try some water sports like surfing or wind-ailing out in the open water! After spending time in the water, you’re undoubtedly going to work up an appetite – don’t worry though, there are plenty of options to choose from. All around the beach, you’ll find an assortment of bars and restaurant that will cater to every taste.
