Unawatuna Beach

Unawatuna is one of the best beaches found in the South Coast of Sri Lanka. It is in fact, a contender for the most popular beach this tropical island has to offer. Here the beach is as lively as can be – you’ll often find the locals coming down to enjoy themselves as the oceanic sunset begins to form.

One of the primary reasons for Unawatuna’s staggering popularity among both locals and tourists is the stunning amount of natural beauty on display here. Here, simply strolling across the white sands of the beach while gazing out in the azure expanse of the Indian Ocean can be a treat all by itself. But that’s not all that Unawatuna Beach has to offer! The waves here are nice and calm and are ideal for a nice, relaxing swim with the whole family. You can also grab your snorkeling gear and go exploring off the coast and wander through the fringing reefs found there. This a great way to get up-close and personal with some of the fantastic marine life that call these waters home – such as the endangered green sea turtle for one.

You can even go exploring along with the palm forests that border the beach. These verdant patches of greenery offer the perfect, secluded escape from the crowds that tend to gather at the beach as the day winds down. While exploring these palm forests, you might even come across a small set path that cuts through the undergrowth. If you follow this along, you’ll eventually find yourself climbing up a hill that overlooks the beach and is crowned with a stunning Buddhist pagoda. It’s the perfect way to bookend your time here in Unawatuna Beach.
