The Ravana’s Cave

Although the Hindu epic Ramayana portrays Ravana as a demon king who ruled Lanka, There are numerous contradictory speculations about him. Some of the ancient chronicles state that he was a devout disciple of Lord Shiva and hence has built numerous temples for his Lord around the island. The epic further describes that king Ravana had abducted Sita, and had kept her in a cave behind a waterfall. The king had done this to take revenge for humiliating his sister by Rama – the husband of Sita. Many believe that the cave from the story is the exact cave that is located behind the Ravana Ella Waterfalls. Though it is not proven whether it is the same cave from the Ramayana, there is conclusive evidence of human habitation which dates back over 25 000 years.

Located at proximity to the waterfall and in the midst of lush vegetation, the cave is surrounded by immaculate vistas and it is part of the Ravana Ella wildlife reserve. Tourists are allowed to visit this site and are offered an opportunity to explore the caves (though it is not recommended to venture too far into it). Even if you don’t believe in the chronicles, there is certainly a mysterious yet enticing vibe to it, and visiting here will indeed be an amazing experience.

Once you have explored the cave and its surroundings, you could venture to witness the waterfalls that are located right below the caves. The falls measures approximately 25 meters in height, and it cascades down from an oval-shaped rock outcrop both the caves and waterfalls lies approximately 1370 meters above sea level and at the foundation of a tall and magnificent cliff.
