Village Cycling Trip Around Sigiriya

Sigiriya is one of the most famous and travelled-to destinations in Sri Lanka. This is in no small part due to it being home to the 8th wonder of the world – the Sigiriya Rock Fortress. But that’s not all either, there’s plenty more to see and do here, making Sigiriya one of the best destinations to visit in the entire country. One of the most enjoyable things you can do here is actually taking a relaxing bike ride along the Sigiriya villages and the surrounding area. It’ll allow you to experience the natural beauty the region has to offer while also introducing you to the local populace, their culture and way of life.

The name Sigiriya translates to ‘Lion Rock’, and according to ancient Sri Lankan chronicles, the spectacular rock fortress that sits atop this rock was once the seat of King Kashyapa. Ever since that time, the rock fortress has drawn the attention and admiration of people both local and foreign. After all, it is the reason why so many people still have a visit to Sigiriya on their bucket list whenever they arrive in Sri Lanka. Of course, this also means that most visitors are focused on climbing the rock and examining the fortress and not much else. By taking a cycling tour across the surrounding area, you’ll be able to avoid the worst of the crowds and gain a new perspective about this fascinating destination.

One of the best things to look forward to during your tour is a visit to the Pidurangala Rock and the Buddhist Monastery found along the path up to it. Other highlights include a trip to the stupa which is said to mark the spot where King Kashyapa was cremated.
