Diving in Passikuda

Home to a vibrant reef ecosystem and numerous wreck sites, Passikuda is regarded as one of the prime destinations for diving in Sri Lanka. The region is also home to one of the world’s longest stretches of shallow waters making it the perfect setting for beginners to learn the skills required for diving. The healthy and vibrant coral gardens of Passikuda teems with marine creatures which include schools of colourful reef fish, a myriad of crustaceans, and other marine dwellers such as reef sharks, eels, rays, octopuses and even sea turtles.

Located a few nautical miles away from Passikuda, there also lies the wreck of HMS Hermes – A British military tanker that was destroyed during world war two. This wreck has now been taken over by reefs and it is now home to a healthy population of marine creatures. This site too is an excellent spot for diving in Passikuda and it certainly brings delight to the adventurer in you!

Tourists can join a diving expedition by getting in touch with a local tour operator and all the necessary equipment and transport will be offered as part of the package. The best times for this excursion is from May to June – during this time the sea is calmer and the visibility underwater remains excellent.
