Unawatuna Beach

Boasting a stretch of pristine golden sands with clear blue skies and turquoise waters, Unawatuna is regarded as one of the most famous beaches in Sri Lanka! The beach is also fringed in coconut palms and offers you the ideal setting to just lean back and relax under the tropical sun. You could also see a small hill that is home to a pagoda and a statue of Lord Buddha in the distance which further accentuates the beach views. All in all visitors to this stunning beach would experience a memorable time coupled with the mesmerising ocean views and plenty of entertainment the beach offers.

The beach is located approximately 5 kilometres away from Galle and a few minute’s drive away from the town of Unawatuna. The beach is surrounded by lush greenery which is home to a variety of wild animals which includes over 60 species of endemic birds and the endangered purple-faced Langur. The beach also boasts vibrant diversity under the water being home to oodles of vibrantly coloured marine creatures. There are smaller patches of corals close to the shores and schools of reef fish along with other varieties of crustaceans inhabit them.

The water is clear and turquoise during high season and you could swim and snorkel if the waves aren’t rough. A number of resorts and restaurants are also located in proximity to the beach and they often host beach parties and special dinner services. Visiting any of these restaurants also presents you with the opportunity to taste the freshest seafood and sample an assortment of local delicacies.

Owing to the popularity of the beach, it is crowded during evening hours but you can enjoy the beach with fewer crowds during early morning hours after sunrise and during the daytime on weekdays. Be on the lookout for any red flags at the beach and if you see one, you should not venture into the waters. Also, if you are visiting the beach with your little ones, make sure that you keep them close to you at all times and do not let them venture far on their own both at the beach and in the waters.
