Enjoy Fresh Fruits and Local Experiences in Markets

Unawatuna is often considered to be one of the most beautiful and picturesque areas to visit in Sri Lanka. Each year, tourists flock by the droves to experience the region’s pristine beaches, lush mangroves and tranquil lagoons. That being said, natural beauty isn’t the only thing you’re likely to find here – there are a number of great local experiences to be had in the nearby town. Among these, one of the best things to do is to visit the markets and get your hands on some fresh and juicy fruit.

Just north of Unawatuna – around 7 kilometres to be exact – is where you’ll find the Galle fruit and flower markets. The location is immediately recognizable from all the stalls full of fresh produce, all packed together – in short, a vast bounty of fruit and vegetable is on display here! These markets are full of the rare and exotic fruit verieties that you’ll find in Sri Lanka. These include items like wood apple, mangosteen and acidic pineapples. All of these have their own inimitable flavours and textures, so try to taste as many as you possibly can during your visit. Of course, if you start to feel too full after a while, you can always take a handful of fruits back home with you!

If you’re looking to stock up on some of that famous Sri Lankan curries and spices, the markets are also a great place to visit. In fact, some Sri Lankan spices can make for quite the tasty souvenir to take back with you! Whatever you buy, know that you’ll be enjoying a bargain by purchasing here at the markets instead of more frequented locations like the Fort.
