Negombo is an area that’s full of exciting things to do and it’s made even better by how close it is to the capital city of Colombo. One of the best places to visit in the region is the picturesque Negombo Lagoon. An afternoon spent fishing here can be a great way to enjoy some quality time alone or with a friend.
There are a number of tour operators that are willing to provide you with an awesome lagoon fishing experience. Usually, a fishing session lasts for around 3 hours – and you can land quite a haul in that time too! Depending on your preference, you can opt for a morning session or an afternoon one. Mornings tend to be cooler and the fish themselves are more active around this time. However, few things can beat the feeling of fishing as you watch the sun slowly begin to set.
The lagoon itself is relatively shallow with the water being separated from the sea via a collection of sand bars, low banks and fringing coral reefs. Your guide should know what the best fishing spot is and will lead you to them. The fish up for grabs here include seer, mullet, pomfret, herring, amberjack and skipjack. Aside from these, you might also get lucky and net yourself a lobster, prawn or shrimp! You can use plenty of items to bait these species, from plugs and spoons to spinners and even live bait.
Once you’ve completed your fishing session it’s time to head back. Consider putting on a BBQ by grilling your catch and slathered with some local sauces.
