Visit the Ambewala Farm

Found in a region that’s fondly referred to as “Little New Zealand” is the famous Ambewala Farm, quite possibly the most famous dairy farm found here in Sri Lanka. A tour of the farm’s premises can be quite the experience and one you should definitely consider if you’re looking for things to do in Nuwara Eliya.

Interestingly, the Ambewala Farm was first set up with the help of the New Zealand government in the 1960s. Over the decades that followed, the farm not only became heralded for its delicious dairy products, but also as a fantastic destination for tourists and travellers to visit and admire.

The Ambewala Farm is usually open for visitors from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm but it’s generally a good idea to call ahead and check if the farm is open on any given day. The entrance ticket usually adds up to about 100 Sri Lankan Rupees.

Once you’re on the site, there’s a variety of things to do. You can always take in the sights – the pristine farmland that the cows graze on seems to stretch on forever. Be sure to bring your camera with you to capture some of these amazing scenes. Exploring the farm is made even more enjoyable by the mild weather that’s usually accompanied by a cool breeze.

After you take a look at everything the farm has to offer, you can relax in the shade and have a nice picnic for yourself. Of course, this is a great opportunity to indulge in the many products the farm produces. You’ll find all kinds of dairy treats here, from fresh milk and cream to tasty yoghurt and cheese.
