Unawatuna is one of the best beaches found on the South Coast of Sri Lanka. It is in fact, a contender for the most popular beach this tropical island has to offer. Here the beach is as lively as can be – you’ll often find the locals coming down to enjoy themselves as the oceanic sunset begins to form. Unawatuna is often considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches found in Sri Lanka, but that’s not all it has to offer – the waters here are perfect for some great surfing action.
There are many surfing spots to choose from in Hikkaduwa for surfing. If you’re a beginner, you’ll want to stick to the shallower areas and first get the hang of things. You could also consider hiring yourself an instructor as well, there are plenty of surfing schools to choose from in the area. In the shallows the water is relatively calm, the rapids aren’t too challenging and the shore is at a safe distance. If you’re more of an intermediary or journeyman surfer, consider going a bit deeper and off the coast. This part of the ocean regularly sees gigantic waves exceedingly over 6 feet in height!
Now, if you’re absolutely new to surfing, don’t be afraid of the sport and restrict yourself to the beach. You’ll see plenty of surfing amateurs fumbling around with their boards at Unawatuna all the time. Practice makes perfect and as mentioned, there is no shortage of surfing schools to choose from here on the South Coast. You can even learn the ropes by befriending one of the many local surfing enthusiasts. Most of them are always up for a chat and are more than willing to show you the absolute basics of riding a wave.
